Michael Chris Schmidt, 39, of Fairmont, Minn., died Wednesday morning, Sept. 11, 1996, in Hibbing, Minn.

He was, born Aug. 31, 1957, the son of Emil and Shirley (Henze) Schmidt Jr., in Milwaukee. As a boy, he moved to St. Louis Park, Minn.; he graduated from St. Louis Park High School in 1975. He then worked for the phone company and Various other jobs before entering the United States Army in March 1984. He was assigned to the Army Reception Station in Fort Jackson, South Carolina and later in Alabama. After his discharge in 1986, he lived in Huntsville, Alabama until 1988, when he returned to Minnesota. He married Joyce Hagar July 17, 1993, in Fairmont, Minn. He worked for National Independent Insurance Brokers of Plymouth, Minn., and was the owner of Schmidt Financial Services in Fairmont. He was an avid sports fan.

He is survived by wife, Joyce, Fairmont; daughter, Kayla Schmidt, Fairmont; stepson, Danny Hager, Fairmont; sister and brother-in-law, Michelle and Chris Turnau, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; brothers, David Schmidt, Fargo, N.D., Rory Schmidt, Hibbing; father-in-law, Jim and wife Kate Brockman, Mitchell, S.D.; sister-in-law, Barb Finstad, Fairmont; stepbrother-in-law, Todd and wife Donnell Rasche, Rapid City, S.D.; aunts and uncles, Slames and Barbara Henze and Lavelle and Joseph Schneider, all of Shell Rock, Iowa; and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by parents and mother-in-law, Marilyn Brockman.

• Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Welcome, Minn.
• Visitation: 4-7 p.m. tonight
• (Friday) at the Olson Funeral Home in Fairmont, and an hour prior to the service at the church.
• Interment: Welcome City Cemetery with full military honors by Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County VFW Post 1222.
